Travel is always changing and Uber Elevate is a sneak peak into the future. We all watched the Jetsons as kids, so I guess this shouldn’t come as a big surprise. Robots and Skype are already a reality – so why not convenient air travel within cities?
Uber plans to market uberAir in partnership with three “launch cities”. This will give them the diversity they need to set themselves up for long-term success. The two cities announced are Dallas and Los Angeles. They are seeking an international city as the third. They want to start operating demonstrator flights as soon as 2020 and begin commercial operations in 2023. You can read all about it here.
They plan to to do it with vertical takeoff and landing in a (VTOL) aircraft. This means faster commutes, less traffic congestion, and cleaner air. On their website they show that VTOL can take you from San Francisco to San Jose California in 15 minutes with an initial fee at $129 but a long term fee at $20.
I don’t know about you but I am excited about the future. I have already seen how much travel has changed in the past 20 years. When we first started traveling we relied on maps. Now we won’t go anywhere without our Tom Tom or maps app on our phone. Most major cell phone carriers offer worldwide coverage. You can rent or buy wireless hot spots such as TEP, so you are never out of touch regardless of where travels take you. You can be your own travel agent with the world wide web. It
Uber has revolutionized quick and inexpensive car hire locally and abroad. I am not surprised they plan to revolutionize air travel.
