Technology can be overwhelming at times. However, finding the right mobile travel app can save you money and enhance your travel experience. Here are a few of our favorites:
Booking.com: Booking.com mobile app let’s you find hotels, motels, and vacation rental deals on the go. You get instant confirmation, paperless check-in, and offline maps. You also get multiple search options such as city, landmark, hotel name, or properties close by. You take your trips with you, so even if you book on a computer you can access your booking through the mobile app.
TripAdvisor: TripAdvisor allows you to compare prices, browse millions of reviews, see photos, explore restaurants, discover cool things to do in any destination, and download maps for over 300 cities for free; avoiding using expensive data roaming plans. Use the online reviews and book without worry.
Kayak: Kayak searches hundreds of travel sites for you. Great for flights, hotels, or cars. You also get some great extras like flight tracker, airport terminal maps and security wait times. Book on Kayak or forward you booking confirmation emails to firstname.lastname@example.org to begin building your trip similar to TripIt. Find shops, duty free, food, coffee, chargers, and more. Share your travel plans with family or friends.
WhatsApp: WhatsApp Messenger is a FREE messaging app. If you are overseas and have your data roaming off you can always use it over Wi-Fi. You can send and receive messages, calls, photos, videos, and voice messages. WhatsApp even has Group Chat.
Bank Apps: The majority of banks today offer a mobile app. Mobile apps make it convenient to check your balance, see recent transactions, deposit checks, or make transfers. When we travel we only keep so much in our checking account. When we have access to Wi-Fi we transfer money from our savings to checking when needed. If your bank doesn’t offer a mobile app maybe it is time to switch banks.
Speak & Translate: Instantly speak 54 languages and hold written conversations in more than 100 languages. Talk or text to get the translation. Let the app speak the translation or read it on your screen. Handoff feature allows you to translate without interrupting your session
Globe Convert: This is an easy and free multiple use converter. It is a nice all in one tool for easy conversion of units and currency. We love it for overseas.
SeatGuru: Get advise about which seat to choose. Get real-time flight status alerts. Search by flight number or airline. See flight information such as arrival time, gate, and baggage carousel.
Travisa Passport and Visa Service: Quickly find out whether or not a visa is required to travel to a specific country. View detailed visa requirements for over 200 countries. Obtain updates on visa requirements. View consular fees for available visa types.
Waze: Waze is a navigation app that alerts travelers of traffic jams, police, accidents, and construction. Get road alerts along the route and find the cheapest gas prices.
Uber: Once you try Uber you will never want to take a taxi again. Uber is a ridesharing app that uses local drivers in the area. You can search and request a driver easily and within minutes. You see the fair upfront and pay using PayPal, Apple Pay, and more (payment options vary by location). Uber is international.
BlaBlaCar: BlaBlaCar is a ridesharing app that hooks up users with cards headed in the same direction. Share city-to-city car journeys with great people. You can also offer a ride to cut down on travel expenses. It is a great way to meet the locals and share travel costs. Available in several countries.
Kindle: We love to read but we hate lugging a book everywhere we go. Download the Kindle app on your phone and your phone becomes an e-reader.
Hipmunk: Another good option when looking for a travel site that compares multiple sites for the best price available. Also offers a Tonight Only option for last minute deals.
These are just a few of our favorite apps. Many apps come free and offer an upgrade at a cost. TIP: Always try the free app first. If you love the app then spend the money to get the full version or version without ads.
