We have been traveling overseas regularly since 2000. Sometimes the best deals can be a year out and only for a week. Other times you can get some great last minute deals during off peak season. Overall though we usually find the best prices between 3 and 4 months prior to departure.
Start looking around 6 months prior to your trip. The best days to look are normally Sunday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night. Use different search sites to get the best deals and then go directly to the airline to see if they will price match. Don’t fret and worry about getting the cheapest price – pay attention to flight times and overall trip length. If you can fly direct it is worth a few dollars more. When you fly direct you don’t have to worry about you or your bags missing their connection.
Pay attention to airports also. Many cities have more than one. Some of the budget airlines use the smaller airports that are further outside the city. You may get a cheaper flight but it might cost you more to get to your destination from the airport.
