Notify your bank and credit card companies before you go!
Fraud is very common these days and the banks are really cracking down. If your card is used in an unfamiliar location the bank will suspend the use of your card. The last thing you want to deal with when travelling overseas is not having access to funds. So before you go call your bank and credit card companies and put in a travel notification. Most allow you to do this online.
Chase is one of the cards we travel with frequently because their Sapphire and United Mileage Plus Explorer card both offer no foreign transaction fees and rental car coverage in most countries. You can post a travel notification with Chase online. Once signed into your account choose “Things you can do”. Under “Things you can do” choose “Update settings & preferences”. Under “Update settings & preferences” choose “Travel Notifications”. Once there – click on Update and enter the dates and destinations.
NOTE: We have had issues using one of our Debit cards in Italy even though we posted a travel notification. We always take at least 2 Debit cards from separate banks to be on the safe side.
